Port Meadow is the largest common land in Oxford, located to the west of the city along the east bank of the River Thames, stretching from Jericho to Wolvercote. Covering 440 acres, this extensive meadow serves as grazing land for cattle and horses. It boasts a diverse array of wildflowers, including buttercups, Bird’s-foot trefoil, and stemless thistles, as well as wetland plants like Silverweed and Strawberry clover.
Visitors to Port Meadow can walk along the west side to reach The Perch, a charming 17th-century tavern adorned with fairy lights on dark evenings, offering tasty food and a cozy open fire. Further along the river, you’ll find The Trout Inn, another excellent pub that combines historical charm with modern comforts, perfect for a sunny day lunch by the river or a warm retreat in winter.
